GRANADA

Nice Places - Episode 04

The same thing happens with places as with music or smells: they create memories. They evoke situations from the past we’ve felt a connection with. With Nice Places, we want to put these places on the map – places that are part of our story and that we want to share with you as we’re absolutely sure that you’ll love them.

Recently, all roads lead us here. Some months ago, we came back to open a shop in this city. It’s a magical place that has inspired one of this year’s collections.
Granada is so much more than the Alhambra Palace. It’s a place that exudes joy and creativity, where its neighbourhoods and people always make you want to stay a little longer.

Spot 1/8 · Pastelería López-Mezquita

This emblematic bakery came to being in 1862. It’s a place steeped in history, which has survived the passing of time and the modernisation of the shops surrounding it. This slice of yesteryear is worth visiting if you’re strolling through the centre. Besides traditional cakes, they specialise in pastries with Moorish roots, like pastela moruna, piononos and felipes de merengue.
Our recommendation? You can’t leave without trying their pestiños.

Spot 2/8 · Casa Ferrer

Located on Cuesta Gomérez, 26, this Granadan guitar shop and workshop was founded in 1875.
It’s a family-run business that is still going strong today, now in its fourth generation. Ana Durán warmly welcomed us and explained the history of one of Spain’s oldest guitar shops. We enjoyed the pieces on display in the shop and visited the workshop.
A must when you’re in Granada.

Spot 3/8 · Librería Sostiene Pereira

Behind Puerta de Elvira is Granada’s most interesting bookshop: Sostiene Pereira is
a unique space where the love and respect for books as objects and literature in general can be felt in every corner. The bookshop specialises in old print, handling old, second-hand, rare and discontinued books.
Pepe, the owner, explains its intriguing name, “Sostiene Pereira”: he originally opened this space without a name but ended up naming it after this Antonio Tabucchi book, one of his favourites. Naturally, you can find an old edition of it here! It’s probably one of our favourite places in Granada.

Spot 4/8 · Puerta de Elvira

This monument is at the foot of Plaza del Triunfo. Puerta de Elvira was the main gate to Nasrid Granada and part of the city’s ancient walls during the Moorish era. Its scale and the way it blends in with the surrounding buildings make it one of the city’s iconic landmarks and most definitely worth visiting.

Spot 5/8 · Corral del Carbón

Right in the heart of the city, the Corral del Carbón is a Moorish corn exchange built in the fourteenth century. This charming place has a courtyard full of galleries and naves, crowned by a square stone fountain. Although the courtyard seems to grab our attention, it’s worth taking time to admire its façade – with a beautiful horseshoe arch – upon entering.

Spot 6/8 · Mirador San Nicolás

This viewpoint – another must – is in the highest part of the Albaicín neighbourhood. Spectacular views of the Alhambra Palace and the Generalife overlooked by the Sierra Nevada await, making the uphill trek all the more worth it.

Spot 7/8 · Albaicín

Many say that this neighbourhood is the most authentic in Granada. For us, it definitely preserves the most character. Perched on a slope on the east side of the city, its seemingly chaotic architecture set into the hillside with white-washed houses and the sound of music do indeed make for a unique neighbourhood. Our advice? Go up in the evening and watch the sunset from a bar with some flamenco music in the background.

Spot 8/8 · Carmen de los Mártires

Carmen de los Mártires is a green oasis on the slopes of the Alhambra’s hillside. This park boasts a wonderful mansion, romantic gardens and Nasrid orchards, not to mention spectacular views of Granada. This lush organised chaos is brimming with history and perfect for a stroll. If you’re lucky, you might even bump into one of the peacocks strutting their stuff.
