Paula Mariscal

From another point of view

Paula Mariscal

We spent a day with Paula Mariscal on the Empordà coast, where she feels so in harmony with the blue of the sea.

We know her for being the director of the peculiar play 'Una obra sense actors', with the company Malnascuts, where the fascinating story of Lorca's Casa de Bernarda Alba is narrated in a space without actors. Paula is passionate about the humanities and the arts, environments in which she has been involved in her family since she was very young. Enthusiastic, positive and very theatrical, she immediately throws herself into the pool, the sea or wherever. We have no doubt that she will continue to create wonderful projects with all her good energy. You can follow her closely on her Instagram.

Q - What introduced you to the world of theatre?

A - I suppose my curiosity... From a very young age I was curious about many different artistic disciplines, but it was difficult to stick to just one! I started acting when I was 14 and my desire to learn led me to Carles Alfaro, my teacher. He was the one who helped me to discover that theatre was just a way of getting to know the human soul, that I dedicated myself to it as I could have dedicated myself to anything else. And also that, if that was my ambition, I was destined to become a director.

Q - How did the idea of doing a play without actors come about?

A - Well, no doubt thanks to Malnascuts, without his provocation I would never have been able to imagine something like this. I've learnt to work by and for the text, so letting go of the only thing I know was something completely unexpected. I remember I was with Elena Martín on a rock in a cove in l'Escala and suddenly there was the challenge. "And the truth is that now I can't imagine not having done it! It was incredible!

Q - How do you feel when an audience spends a certain amount of time listening to/seeing your work?

A - Vertigo and respect, so I approach creation with great rigour and demand. I believe that the creator must be up to the demands of the spectator. Then it can go well, badly, regularly... the spectator can connect or not... But when both (spectator and creator) take charge of the demands on both sides, something exceptional happens, don't you think?

Q - What other authors would you like to bring to the theatre?

A - Carver, Pasolini... I like the classics, hahahahahaha....

Q - Which playwright/artist would you like to collaborate with? Even if it's not in a theatre format.

A - Ufff... Well, I'm really looking forward to working with La Veronal, Marcos Morau's dance company.

Q - What will we find in your next works?

A - A lot of actors! Ahhahahahahah...
